DISCRIMINATORY LAWS IN NEPAL AND THEIR IMPACT ON WOMEN :
A Review of the Current Situation and Proposals for Change

Despite being a party to 16 international human rights instruments, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), Nepal still has at least 118 legal provisions, spread in 54 different laws, including the Constitution, that have discriminatory provisions.

Adverse effects on women of the discriminatory provisions are manifold: economic dependency, domestic violence, lack of access to resources and exploitation in all its forms.

Through a detailed analysis of the existing discriminatory provisions and their adverse impact on women, this study makes a forceful argument for change - in the laws, policies and the mindset of those who have the duty to execute changes. It is high time that government begins in earnest to abide by its international commitments and ensure that women in Nepal enjoy the rights inherent in every human person.
